Director's January Message

Sideline Behavior, Respect, and Trusting Our Coaches

Dear KODA Families,

As we move deeper into the heart of our season, we want to pause and reaffirm something that matters deeply to us as a club: the way we treat one another—especially our athletes and coaches—defines who we are as KODA.

Let Coaches Coach
Our coaches make decisions every day about rotations, serving order, positions, playing time, and team responsibilities. These decisions are thoughtful, intentional, and grounded in what they believe is best for the team and for individual athlete development.
While it may not always be visible from the sidelines, there are reasons behind these choices.

We ask parents to trust our coaches in their role and to allow them the space to coach during practices and competitions. If questions or concerns arise, we absolutely welcome respectful conversation—but those conversations must happen calmly, privately, and at an appropriate time, never during a match,  in the heat of competition, or during the time of tournaments.

Communication with Respect
KODA is a community built on respect, balance, and care. Speaking to coaches, athletes, officials, or other families with anger, profanity, or hostility is never acceptable and is a direct violation of our Parent Code of Conduct.

Words matter. Tone matters. Presence matters.
The way adults behave on the sidelines can either strengthen a team—or fracture it.

Shared Responsibility & Team Culture
Part of club volleyball is learning responsibility, collaboration, and accountability. Coaches often encourage athletes to work together to solve small team logistics, such as shared responsibilities. When something isn’t working, coaches adjust. That process takes observation, communication, and time.

We ask families to trust that process and to partner with us in supporting—not undermining—the growth of our athletes.

Our Values Are Not Optional
When you commit to KODA, you are not just joining a team—you are joining a culture.
A culture that values:

  • respect over reaction

  • growth over frustration

  • solutions over blame

  • trust over control

  • balance over burnout

Every action from the sidelines sends a message to our athletes. It can inspire confidence—or create pressure. It can model leadership—or model disrespect. Each of us has the power to shape the environment our athletes experience.

We understand that emotions can run high in competitive moments. We also believe that our athletes deserve adults who model composure, kindness, and perspective.

KODA will always stand for our athletes, our coaches, and our values.

Thank you for being part of our community and for helping us create an environment where every athlete can grow, feel safe, and feel supported.

With care and clarity,
Heather

Commitment to Balance

Dear KODA Families,

As we begin another club season together, I want to take a moment to share what you can expect from KODA—not just in terms of logistics, but in the why behind how we operate. Our approach is intentional, rooted in care, and reflective of the values we believe matter most for our athletes, families, and coaches.

Practice Structure & Our Commitment to Balance
At KODA, we love volleyball—but we love our people more. Our practice schedule reflects a strong commitment to balance and sustainability. Most teams will practice on weekends through the winter, with mid-week practices beginning in March. This structure allows athletes to prioritize school sports during the winter months, which always come first, while also protecting family time, academic focus, and overall well-being.

Gym availability and athlete schedules are more limited during the school week, and our season is planned thoughtfully with those realities in mind. Each team’s practice schedule is intentionally designed to ensure that athletes receive the number of practices that families have committed to and that coaches are contracted and compensated to provide. In many cases, particularly as the season progresses, coaches may choose to offer additional time or opportunities beyond that plan. When this happens, it reflects a personal decision by the coach and an investment they are making on their own time—not an expectation or a standard requirement. These moments speak to the care, commitment, and professionalism of our coaching community, and we are deeply grateful for the ways they often give more than what is required in service of their teams.

Our coaches are individually contracted but are very much part of a collaborative, club-wide structure. We work closely with them to align practice plans with both their coaching vision and their personal and family needs. You may see a coach’s child at practice or even on the bench at a tournament. These arrangements are made thoughtfully and transparently, and we trust our coaches to care for their teams with the same attention and responsibility they give their own families.

As KODA continues to grow and evolve, we will explore additional opportunities for athletes—especially those not participating in winter school sports—but our culture will always honor balance for athletes, families, and coaches alike.

How We Represent KODA
KODA means friendship, and how we speak to and about others matters. We ask all families to be mindful of their words—at practices, tournaments, online, and in everyday conversations. Please never speak negatively about another athlete, whether they are on your KODA team, another club team, or a school team. We never fully know someone’s story or circumstances, and a good friend chooses respect and compassion every time.

At KODA, we focus on concerns or problems—not people. We work toward solutions, clarity, and resolution with care. You may not always agree with every decision that is made, and that is okay. Please know that every decision is made thoughtfully, with consideration for the impact on the club as a whole.

When you commit to KODA, we ask for your trust—in our values, our approach, and our leadership. We understand that KODA may not be the best fit for everyone, but it is the right fit for many. Our decisions are grounded in a culture that values clarity, balance, our schools, our athletes, our coaches, and our families.

Thank you for being part of KODA. We are grateful for your trust, your partnership, and the opportunity to grow alongside your athletes this season.

With appreciation,
Heather
